2018 Hybrid won’t start - check engine, flashing D/R

After about 17K miles and 15 months of reliable service, our 2018 Hybrid died about 1000 miles from home while we're on vacation. Everything seems normal when getting into the car (UConnect screen, dash, etc.) but upon stepping on the brake and hitting Start the car will say something like "Press brake and hit button to start" and the shifter either will not turn, or will turn but the D or R will flash on the dash and shifter dial.
